Sustainability

We want you to enjoy our furniture for a very long time, that is why we select our raw materials very carefully and only use the highest quality beech and birch veneers to ensure our sustainability. HABA use veneer from genuine timber for all furniture products to create a sustainable classroom environment.

Sustainability and environmental protection have been an integrated part of HABA policy for over 80 years. In fact, this is one of the reasons we chose to partner with HABA. Our core beliefs and values fit so closely with the HABA ethics. We have a deep commitment to both creating beautiful, flexible learning environments for children and our responsibility to sustainability. All our quality, modular furniture products are made with real wood veneer from genuine timber, to create a healthy room climate.

How do we achieve sustainability in manufacturing?

1
Planting Trees
HABA use veneer from genuine timber for all furniture products. Our wood is sourced from sustainable forestry that maintains woodlands – at least one new tree has to be planted for each tree we use!
2
Local Suppliers
Our roots are in Germany –The beech and birch wood used comes from forests within a radius of 150km of our site in Bad Rodach, Germany. We use only regional suppliers which carry the PEFC seal, ensuring short delivery routes.
3
On-site Production
Our furniture is made by over 500 skilled workers in our on site production plant, meaning we can directly influence the entire value chain as well as the use of materials and energy.

4
Low Energy & Emissions
We constantly investigate how much material is used and the amount of emissions and waste. The use of state of the art machinery allows us to continually improve the energy-related performance of our factories. Raw materials are processed with a low level of energy.

5
Renewable Energy Sources
During manufacturing, the chips and other waste are pressed into particle board or used for generating energy in our factories. Every year 4500 tonnes of wood scraps from processing are fed into our heating system. This lets us heat all the buildings at our headquarters without needing to use fossil fuels.

6
Quality Control
Quality control and rigorous safety testing also takes place on site so furniture is not transported elsewhere.

7
Made to Order
All our products are made to order, so there is no waste or storage in warehouses. When shipping our products, we use only the most environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging material possible- and only as much as we really need too.
8
Recycling Packaging
We offer an inside delivery service to set up rooms and remove packaging, which is then recycled or disposed of in an environmentally responsible way, certified and regulated by the Environment Agency.

Sustainability is a key at every step of the process

Recycling of leftover wood, use of rainwater for sanitation facilities, office air-conditioning through earth-air heat exchangers, electricity generation by photovoltaic systems, natural open spaces and facades, green roofs – the list of HABA’s measures to protect the environment is long. The HABA Family of Companies’ office building is one of Germany’s top 20 most sustainable buildings.

For us, complying with all applicable environmental laws and standards is not an obligation, but second nature! Sustainable action is a central element of the corporate philosophy – the office building “Leschenhof” (headquarters and factory production at Bad Rodach, Germany), completed at the end of 2012, represents this tradition and was awarded the Gold Certificate by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB – German Sustainable Building Council) in 2014.
